While the telecommunications industry is changing with new technologies such as packet voice transport, and
services such as VoIP, one item is not changing: customers’ expectations of voice quality. Engineers optimized the traditional network equipment for the human voice, ear, and the nature of conversation. As such, today’s customers have an established expectation of voice quality.

Legacy network echo cancellers provide protection for hybrid echo with shorter tail delays and little or no acoustic echo control, but as networks become more complex with the addition of wireless and VoIP services, delays increase beyond the capability of most hybrid echo cancellers and acoustic echo emerges as a new challenge.
